Ocean Management & MPAs

Capacity building for a blue economy

Ocean management and Marine Protected Areas provide a refuge from pressures on the marine ecosystem by humans. They benefit the health of coastal and marine ecosystems, thereby improving the sustainability of the resources they supply to humans. Marine Managed Areas can support marine life and allow local communities to thrive, providing us ecosystem services. Oceanogami supports efficient ocean management and Marine Managed Areas implementation from writing the proposal to the final implementation, taking into account social, cultural and environmental values.

Oceanogami also provides training in leadership skills for conservation science. Our training is designed and adapted to the need of the customer, we can coach small teams in collaboration, communication and leadership skills needed to manage and protect the marine environment effectively. Our current projects cover a wide array of marine environmental topics at different levels, from general knowledge to postgraduate level.

We can help you with:

  • Stakeholder engagement. Identification of key stakeholders and design of a stakeholder engagement strategy appropriate for your Marine Managed Areas designation process, from a one-off bilateral consultation to ongoing collaborative multisectoral management.
  • Monitoring and evaluation. Scientific support for species and ecosystem monitoring and impact assessment by delivering scientific training and tailored talks about marine biodiversity, ecology and related conservation issues.
  • Planning. From site selection to the development of management, implementation, and monitoring plans.
  • Implementation. Drawing from real-world experience to identify the strengths and weaknesses of existing management approaches in order to improve them and make them workable in practice.
  • Managers and enforcers. Training and capacity building to improve technical skills (e.g. marine ecology, spatial data analysis, decision support tools, impact assessment & monitoring methods…) and management skills (e.g. stakeholder engagement, process design, strategic management, governance analysis…).
  • Communication and outreach. Development of communication strategies, personal communication styles and key messages to communicate to different audiences. We can develop communication materials (including audio-visual materials and infographics) to help you promote or communicate about your Marine Managed Area via different channels, including social media.
  • Facilitation and Conflict resolution skills. If carefully planned and well managed, collaboration helps to minimize conflicts and solve problems in marine resource management. We can help you develop the process planning, facilitation, and conflict management skills in order to design and implement effective collaborative processes.
  • Problem solving. Increase teams’ effectiveness at problem solving by applying a systems approach to reveal assumptions, identify root causes of problems, and think strategically to develop targeted solutions.
  • Personal leadership development. Support for individual team members to identify and build on their personal leadership skills.

We also work with our Mediterranean Marine Conservation Leadership Network to organize training to MPA practitioners and professionals in the Mediterranean basin.

Cabo de Cope

We assist in the different processes of Marine Managed Areas or Marine Protected Areas; from the development of project proposals and stakeholder engagement, through to designing an ocean management plan and implementation. For example, we assisted Blue Marine Foundation in the first steps to propose the marine managed area Cabo de Cope, in Murcia, Spain. We support co-managed marine areas where sustainable fishing and tourism are integrated in the management plan. Supporting local communities while preserving the marine environment is our goal.

Designing capacity building for early career professionals

We assist in the development of programs for early career professionals to become future leaders in the conservation of our oceans and environment. For example, we are helping to design an education program in Catalonia “FP=Formación Profesional” with the company ESEP and also supporting programs on capacity building in Marine Protected Areas with Europarc.

We are also an associate partner with CORRIENTE XXI, a project for capacity building in the field of Higher Education in the framework of the Erasmus+ programme Key Action 2 funded by the European Commission. The project supports the needs of Peru and Ecuador towards the sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems and resources, both nationally and international. CORRIENTE XXI acts as an investor in all aspects of the Higher Education curriculum, like improved research-basis, international embedding, teaching approaches, and other. This will lift the quality level of 5 master programmes in Peru and Ecuador, increase employability and raise awareness on the importance of aquatic sciences and management. These efforts will translate into more effective guidelines for policy and management both nationally and international and increase scientific collaboration.

Oceanogami contributes in capacity building with other international partners and helps create content about transversal interdisciplinary capacities to improve marine conservation.
